About Me

I'm John Huntington, author of Control Systems for Live Entertainment, the first book on show control and entertainment control systems. Through Zircon Designs, I do consulting and design work on entertainment control, show control, and audio systems, but this site contains many non-commercial resources related to entertainment, technology, and anything else I find interesting.

Blast From The Past

After co-leading a group of kayakers at Sebago I stopped into Coney Island to check out a rockabilly festival and walk through Astroland one last time before it closes forever.  And I thought I had travelled back through time or maybe was still a bit groggy from my rooftop BBQ the night before, when I saw this on the boardwalk:

It was there for the Coney Island Dancers, who usually have a couple speakers on sticks.  Apparently they went all out (and all the way back to about 1978 speaker technology!) for Labor Day. The guys who set it up ("Melody One") were very careful, and all the drivers (surprisingly) were working, so it actually sounded pretty good if you could get into the high frequency dispersion and out of a nasty driver overlap spot.

Wow. A 4520, a 2395 lens - probably with a 2482 driver, and a couple of bullets. That's livin' large, 70's style - and in the photo they look in pretty good shape. Were they beat-up up close? Carried a pair of the '20's from 1970-72 in the navy blue school bus with the pink rat fink on the side. From Saranac Lake, NY in the east, to Ellicotville in the west, to Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario (look that one up) in the north.
