Touring New York's Harbors With The Hidden Harbor Tour (Photos)

On Tuesday, I went on the Working Harbor Commitee's excellent Hidden Harbor(r) Newark Bay tour aboard the Zephyr.  We had perfect weather, and I had my own personal tour guide--my friend the amazing artist Bowsprite, who knows just about every boat in the harbor.

I've seen most of these places in my kayak or from the shore, but it was a unique perspective, from on board a fast ship, and an excellent trip.  We left South Street Seaport:

And headed out past the Red Hook Container Terminal:

where we saw a ship coming in to unload:

The tour then enters the Erie Basin:

We then crossed over toward Staten Island, passing more ships along the way:

And the surreal looking Bayonne Golf Club:

The trip then enters the Kill Van Kull, "the area's busiest waterway", which runs between Staten Island and Bayonne.

We then passed under the Bayonne bridge:

And entered Newark Bay, and passed by container ports:

They were dredging the area deeper as we went by:

We headed back north as the sun was setting:

All in all, a great trip which I highly recommend!
