End of Year Road Trip Photos

I bought a new Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, so I figured I'd break it in by driving over 2000 miles to visit my family and friends for the holidaze. I headed out from NYC through the abandonded town of Centralia, PA, where an underground coal fire has been burning since 1962 (see smoke coming up from in the foreground):

Made my way down through the backroads of Virginia:

We had a fair amount of snow in Asheville:

I got in a day of skiing up in Banner Elk, and later headed down from Asheville through the backroads of South Carolina:

Past some pine forest clear cuts:

And here's the result:

The Subaru did great on snow, and even mud:

Made it to Charleston for New Years:

I jumped in the ocean too as part of their Polar Bear Plunge.  I headed north and had to stop at Huntington Beach State Park just because of the name:

Stopped in Myrtle Beach

Caught the last night of the lights on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

Stopped in at the Wallops Island NASA launch facility:

And on my way home, passed by the headwaters of the Chester River, near where I grew up:

I stopped in Philly to see the Liberty 360 attraction; I'll do a separate write up on that once I get caught up.
