Why Do Our Ears Pop?

Being a sound guy, I'm always concerned about my ears, and have always wondered why they pop.  I knew it was about equalizing pressure, but I didn't know exactly how it worked. "The Weather Guys" in the USA Today explain it, featuring this nice graphic:
